GMAT QUANT Week 2

During week 2 of your GMAT Quant preparation we will be focusing on exponents/roots/absolute value, Data Suffiency strategy, and some specific types of word problems (rates/work, averages, ratios, percent change). All of the underlying algebra is the same as the algebra from week 1 but these question types respond well to some GMAT specific tools and strategies. This is a big week for Data Sufficiency.  Learn how to count equations. Learn the concept of Yes/No. Learn about defining a threshold. Understand when it is appropriate to pick numbers. Practice using special numbers (0, 1, +, -, decimals, integers).  You are not going to be a DS expert this week but start learning how to be organized in your Data Sufficiency approach.

This week you may start to feel that the work has gotten more difficult. In some senses it has but the reality is that you don’t have that “fresh” energy from week one. You may start to feel that there is an overwhelming amount of work to get done and that you will never be able to learn everything. This feeling is normal. Be OK with it.  Keep studying:)

GMAT VERBAL Week 2

Week two of verbal is all about Sentence Correction and Reading Comprehension strategy. Pick a strategy for Sentence Correction and start reviewing the major grammar rules as they relate to the GMAT. I would suggest a strategy based around the major error types:  Agreement, Parallelism (lists/comparisons), and Modifiers. Most Sentence Correction questions can be conquered by analyzing these three categories of errors so I would get really familiar with the rules surrounding these three categories. Remember to focus on the structure of the sentence and the meaning of sentence (ignore how things sound).  Here are some Sentence Correction posts that might be helpful: Here, Here, Here, and Here.

Pick a strategy for your GMAT Reading Comprehension. In general: simpler is better.  The most important thing is to pick a reading strategy which helps you focus on the important information in the passage so that after reading the passage you come away with the main idea, primary purpose, and authors point of view. I am not a big fan of skimming or skipping portions of the passage but of slowing down and focusing on the important information. Spend more time reading and understanding so that you spend less time surfing through the answer choices. The other thing that I find helpful in GMAT Reading Comprehension is to anticipate the correct answer. For most GMAT Reading Comprehension questions you should be able to come up with an answer in advance. If you are unable to do this on a consistent basis (and you are disappointed with your RC scores) then you should re-consider your reading strategy because you are probably missing the important points in the passage. Also, keep reading the Economist!
