Most of our students do 12–18 hours of tutoring. We try to be as efficient as possible and get a lot of mileage out of keeping your studying extremely organized. But to answer this for you we need to know where you are in your GRE prep and where you want to go.

If you want fine-tuning after studying on your own for four months, you will probably need less time than someone starting from scratch. If you are well below your target, expect to spend more time with a GRE tutor. Everybody learns at their own pace and everybody has different goals.

Google “GRE tutor” and “GRE tutoring” and make a list of the first three pages of companies. Ask friends, family, and colleagues for referrals. With duplicates and obvious spam removed the list gets short quickly.

Then: eliminate the big companies and the classified-ads sites (Wyzant, Varsity). Look at the writing on what’s left. Is it professional? Are these people really GRE experts? Is there a concrete offering, or is it just a study buddy? Who runs the company?

• Hourly rates far below average are a bad sign

Look for companies that specialize in tutoring and the GRE/GMAT, that have a years-long track record, and preferably that are run by a test prep expert. Whittle it down to three or so, send each your GRE history and goals, and ask for a tutoring plan. If the plan makes sense, have a call. Pick your favorite.
