There are plenty of poor online GMAT tutors and just as many poor in-person tutors. Put a low-rent tutor anywhere and you’ll get a sub-standard experience. Hire a great tutor who has no plan for how to run online sessions and you’ll also end up behind.

Tutoring online requires additional skills. That said, provided you’re working with a seasoned online tutoring pro, we don’t think there’s a better way to do your GMAT prep. The convenience is significant, and the shared whiteboard and materials work very well in our system.

We’ve done tens of thousands of hours of successful online GMAT tutoring. We usually run the consultation on the tutoring platform so you can get a sense for it before committing.

Most of the collaboration is screen sharing with a virtual whiteboard, so we can share materials and work together on screen. The whiteboard lets your tutor resize, copy and paste, and clear the board instantly, so the work goes faster. We take screenshots of each stage of the lesson so you can review later.

We can also pull from our full vault of GMAT materials during the session. All of our tutoring materials are online, as is your error log, which we keep in Google Docs.

What you need is basically what you need for any online meeting: a solid internet connection, a well-functioning computer, headphones, a webcam, and a quiet room.

• Internet. Most moderately specced connections work fine. If you have a decent phone plan you can also tether to your phone. In extreme cases you can dial in for audio and use the internet connection only for screen sharing.
• Software. Create an account and download Zoom. We have a professional plan with everything we need for tutoring. To join a session you click the link. As a back-up we also use Google Meet.
• Hardware. A dependable computer (not one that freezes or restarts intermittently). We strongly recommend headphones to eliminate echo and background noise. We keep a webcam on because non-verbal cues help communication, and we recommend you do too, but plenty of successful sessions have run without one on the student’s side.
• Space. A reasonably distraction-free workspace. Someone walking past in the background or some traffic noise is fine; a roommate re-watching a series at full volume next to you is not.

We’ve had many very positive tutoring experiences with students who had exhausted themselves with other companies and came to us for one last shot.

At this point you need someone to take a close look at your problem-solving approach and your test habits to figure out what you need to work on. It is not about spinning your wheels doing a trillion practice questions. It is about figuring out how to practice properly and how to develop the habits that give you confidence on test day.

If there is a way for you to improve your GMAT score, we’d like to think we will find it. Even if you have struggled in the past and feel like you have hit a wall, there could still be options. If we don’t think we can help, we will tell you.

Most of our students do 12–18 hours of tutoring. We try to be as efficient as possible and get a lot of mileage out of keeping your studying extremely organized. But to answer this for you we need to know where you are in your GMAT prep and where you want to go.

If you want fine-tuning after studying on your own for four months, you will probably need less time than someone starting from scratch. If you are well below your target, expect to spend more time with a GMAT tutor. Everybody learns at their own pace and everybody has different goals.

We hope you end up here, but it’s better to do some research so you can compare what we offer with what other tutoring companies do.

Google “GMAT tutor” and “GMAT tutoring” and make a list of the first three pages of companies. Ask friends, family, and colleagues for referrals. With duplicates and obvious spam removed the list gets short quickly.

Then: eliminate the big companies and the classified-ads sites (Wyzant, Varsity). Look at the writing on what’s left. Is it professional? Are these people really GMAT experts? Is there a concrete offering, or is it just a study buddy? Who runs the company?

• Free first sessions are a bad sign
• Unlimited tutoring for a flat fee is a bad sign
• Hourly rates far below average are a bad sign

Look for companies that specialize in tutoring and the GMAT, that have a years-long track record, and preferably that are run by a GMAT expert. Whittle it down to three or so, send each your GMAT history and goals, and ask for a tutoring plan. If the plan makes sense, have a call. Pick your favorite.

Our focus is official GMAT questions retired from previous administrations of the test. Without exception, these should be the center of any GMAT program. Over the years we have gathered every relevant piece of official material, including obscure and out-of-print sets, and built a system for getting the most out of it.

The total bank is 8,000+ questions, organized by topic and difficulty and assigned based on your needs. You won’t need all of them. If you’re strong at verbal we have enough difficult verbal to keep you working at a high level for your whole prep. If you need a lot of basic quant to drill fundamentals, we have a large pool of those too.

We also use a curated set of LSAT questions to fine-tune verbal, since they are high quality and harder than GMAT questions, and, depending on your profile, a set of GRE quant questions that are good for learning the basics.
