GMAT Study Guide: Week 5

Things are getting serious in this GMAT Study Guide:)  We are reaching the halfway point. The good news is that you should be seeing some improvement.  Most of what the GMAT has to offer should be somewhat familiar. Yes – there will still be plenty of questions that you get wrong but the review should be getting easier (remember to review correct answers in addition to the errors). Understanding explanations should be faster. You are probably getting very familiar with GMAT Club, Beat the GMAT, and the Manhattan GMAT Forums – that’s great!  That means that you are really applying yourself to reviewing your mistakes. Keep it up!  Learning from your mistakes is critical. That’s how you develop GMAT Confidence. The forward movement comes from organized review. Keep working through that error log!  And yes, you guessed it:  here comes the first GMATPrep test.  Really?  Yep.  No joke?  Nope. We’re doing it. It’s time to start getting acquainted with the real deal. We are going to start doing these now so you can learn all that you possibly can from the GMATprep. Take the GMATprep (and all timed sections) in as real conditions as possible.  And please:  be rested.  It’s great to do these tests first thing in the morning. It can be really disheartening to do a test after a long day of work and then get a terrible score. Let’s set ourselves up for success and practice how we are going to play. Let’s remember good GMAT study habits. Oh – Have you registered for your GMAT? This article on GMAT Registration has all the information you need about scheduling, rescheduling, and canceling your GMAT.

GMAT Study Guide Quant Week 5

The Quant focus for this week is statistics. So read up on mean, median, mode, standard deviation, range, and the properties of consecutive sets. Here are some statistics practice questions with some detailed strategies for approaching these questions:

GMAT Question of the Day Statistics 1

GMAT Question of the Day Statistics 2

GMAT Question of the Day Statistics 3

GMAT Question of the Day Statistics 4

GMAT Question of the Day Statistics 5

Along with statistics we are going to check out limit questions. These are questions that require you think about the boundaries of a system. How big/small a variable can be. Thinking in extremes. This type of thinking is very helpful in the GMAT quant. Especially in the DS. Somewhat connected to limits questions are threshold questions. These are also more common in DS. You might think of them as a type of inequality question. The general strategy for threshold questions is to figure out where the threshold is so that you can judge whether you are clearly on one side or the other. We are also going to look at DS questions that have limited solution sets. These questions seem unsolvable but because of some translation or limiting factor are actually solvable. The limiting factor usually has to with the fact that the variables must represent integers and the statements introduce a divisibility issue.

GMAT Study Guide Verbal Week 5

Hopefully you are getting in the groove with your GMAT verbal. We’re going to continue cruising with our LSAT work. You might feel really challenged by these LSAT tests. That is OK. Keep pushing. Stay organized and methodical.  Keep working on being an active reader: process the information as you read. For Critical Reasoning identify the main conclusion. Find the gap between the evidence and the conclusion. That is where you find the answers. In Critical Reasoning we’ll be looking at bolded phrase questions. Many students find these extremely challenging. Two things that can help:

 1.  Identify whether a statement is a premise (Evidence, Fact, Support) or a conclusion (Claim, Opinion, Position)

2.  Eliminate answer choices by analyzing one statement at a time.

Stay organized with your Sentence Correction work. Keep focusing on the structure of the sentences. Keep focusing on the big rules: Agreement (verb/pronoun), Parallelism (comparisons/lists), and Modifiers (Details and Action next to Owners). Most sentence correction can be tackled with these three categories of errors. Practice identifying them!

GRE Reading Comprehension Option

GMAT Reading Comprehension passages are generally shorter then LSAT ones. If you would like more reading comprehension practice on some shorter passages you can supplement with some GRE reading comprehension.  The big book of GRE has 52 short reading comprehension passages. They are great tough little passages and are excellent for when you don’t have the time for a longer LSAT passage.

And of course a friendly little reminder to read the economist to help improve your GMAT Reading Comprehension!
